Steve Lempereur a Djåke Desmet

Gentlemen,
As you may be aware when I add transcripts (captions, subtitles - whatever you want to call them) to videos on youtube when I add the Walloon text, there is no option to call them that!
On and off for the last year I had been submitting feedback comments to google about this, as that really makes me unhappy. Recently I started really being aggressive about this making comments about it on social media.
What I am forwarding is some help from an unexpected source. So we will see where this goes. It seems promising.
https://www.youtube.com/@WI-Walloon/playlists
I also created a petition also
https://www.change.org/p/request-google-to-support-walloon-subtitles
And am awaiting for this to be mentioned in few publications that I have reached out to.

Hi Steve,
Yes it is indeed me who contacted you on Reddit! Sorry for the late reply (and the issue with the Reddit account, I had to create one and it probably flagged the system due to it being too new).
I'm in contact with members of the team that are working on expanding Google Translate to minority languages, and they're positively involved with issues surrounding those minority languages and dialects. I will immediately relay your issues to them and keep you updated on the outcome! I can't guarantee that they have any say in the matter, the way I understand it they have compartmentalized Google into different products (the Translate team is very different from YouTube), but they are generally very open to these kinds of suggestions, and it doesn't seem to be too much trouble to add Walloon as a language, especially since it is already embedded into systems such as Unicode and Ethnologue.
Your YouTube channel is a beautiful initiative! The fact that a small community of Walloon-speakers still survived in the US has been known here for some time, but we rarely hear anything about it. In my research, I'm involved with developing language technologies to support such minority, low-resource languages as Walloon. I am currently focused on Limburgish (which is probably the language that Walloon interacted with most in the past thousand years, at least the eastern dialects), but I am working towards expanding my research to Walloon, either next year or the year after. The situation of Walloon in Belgium is also beyond desperate, but there's growing interest in doing something with it, and I would like to steer my research towards developing language and educational tools for Walloon too. I am mostly in contact with Walloon centered around the province of Liège (where it is still somewhat - albeit barely - alive), but planning on considering all its varieties.
If it is alright for you, I would like to stay in touch in the future if there is ever a possibility of working together. Likewise, if I can be of any need with giving you access to sources or material in Walloon, please do let me know anytime. Through the archive and library of ULiège there is a bunch of non-digitized material available, and I'm in touch with associations that try to keep the language alive. Often they operate very clandestinely, and only in French, so they tend to stay off the radar.
Best regards, |

Mi response a Steve :
Thank you for your efforts for Walloon. Yes it is very important to have "wa" on Google. We missed it in 2001.
I talk with Jacques Desmet and with Pablo Sarachaga (who gets a copy; he was the author of the recognition of Walloon with code "wa") about the topic. I made a page on Berdelaedje.
I 'll add it to my next newsletter. _________________ Li ci ki n' a k' on toû n' vike k' on djoû. |

Dear Steve,
Thanks for writing, and it's nice to meet you! We're happy to put you in touch with Dr. Craig Cornelius (CCed here), one of our board members, on Google's Internationalization team.
Craig, Steve is interested in learning how he might get Walloon included in the list of subtitling options on Google products. Do you know the best way to proceed?
All the best,
Anna Belew
